Being Mission Driven in Challenging Times: Purpose Amid Political Fragmentation

Across the world, there is a growing challenge to liberal democratic values—from the rise of the far right, to post-truth populism, to eroding trust in public institutions. In this environment, achieving clear, coherent, and collective “Big M” Missions—like green transitions, inclusive economic growth, or democratic renewal—has become more difficult, and more contested. Yet amid this fragmentation, we may be overlooking something important: the emergence of “small m” missions—localized, organizational-level efforts where alignment, creativity, and integrity remain possible.

These are the missions of departments, agencies, and teams that continue to deliver public value, even when national or international political consensus – even regarding basic democratic tenets - feels out of reach.
