The more resilient a city is, the better its ability to absorb shocks and overcome long-term challenges. A resilient city is one that is better able to construct the future it wants for its citizens.
We welcome Lina Liakou, EME lead at the Global Resilient Cities Network, and Grainia Long, Belfast’s Commissioner for Resilience, to discuss how resilience in cities can be built and how it can be embedded across urban structures and institutions.
Lina Liakou is the Managing Director for Europe and the Middle East for the Global Resilient Cities Network. Lina leads the resilience practice in Europe and the Middle East for the Global Resilient Cities Network (formerly 100RC), working with the 21 member cities across the region. Before joining the Network, Lina was Deputy Mayor and Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Thessaloniki, Greece.
Grainia Long is Belfast’s first Commissioner for Resilience, appointed in June 2018. She is also Senior Independent Director of Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing, a housing association with 58,000 homes across London and elsewhere in England. From 2015-2018, she was Chief Executive of the ISPCC- the national child protection charity in Ireland, and from 2011-2015 was Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, an international professional body for people who work in housing. She served two terms as a Commissioner in the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, from 2011 to 2017.
