Professor Edgar Pieterse is an urban researcher, writer and curator. At the University of Cape Town, he is founder and managing director of the African Centre for Cities (ACC) and professor at the School of Architecture and Planning. He also holds the South African Research Chair in Urban Policy. His research and teaching focuses on urban development policy, everyday culture, radical social economies, reactive design and adaptive governance systems. His work has highlighted ways of developing and communicating a differentiated and contextual perspective that can be used to rethink and recreate the built environment in problem cities. He also regularly advises numerous international and African urban planning agencies, foundations and governments.
