The Playful Bureaucracy of Electionville, a Serious Game About Local Politics

How do we make democratic processes fun and engaging? How do we lower the thresholds for participation? What tools can we use? The initial trigger for the boad-game Electionville was the observed lack of understanding and engagement among youth regarding local democracy processes and an assessment of the material available to change that. The mission was to address this gap by providing a playful, interactive platform for young individuals to learn about and engage with the democratic process, thereby promoting active civic participation. What surprised us was that we started to get reports that the game was used by human resources departments at municipalities when introducing and on-boarding new employees. We were told that the game worked as a great tool to explain how it is to work in a politically run workplace and that it clarified the different roles. Electionville is one of many tools Fabel has developed to increase democratic engagement.
