Igniting Hope to Save Democracy: Galvanizing Youth Leadership
Namatai Kwekweza, the winner of the Kofi Annan Foundation NextGen Democracy Prize of 2023, passionately spells out how we need to defend democracy and highlights 11 key words to guide us on our way: Amandla, which means power and is popular rallying cry to and for the people. Reimagination, and how we need to rethink our global order. Ubuntu, an ancient African word meaning cherish the humanity of others. Complexity, as in order to understand that issues are not black and white. To keep memory of the pain suffered by many, and to realize that sacrifice is needed as struggle has a cost. The need to be inclusive especially towards the young and women, and related to this word is dignity. Hope, that Namatai calls the music of the heart, which is linked to courage so as to continue to challenge those who deny us our rights. And finally future – as the best way to protect the future is to create it.
