City Experiment Fund: Lessons Learned 5 Years In
Launched in early 2019, the City Experiment Fund (CEF) is a joint effort by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic to support five cities across the Europe and Central Asian region in applying the so-called ‘portfolio’ approach to tackle complex urban challenges. This approach recognises that there are no simple, singular solutions to complex challenges and that addressing complexity (especially wicked problems) requires experimentation, continuous learning, and dynamic management.
Few years on, the cities of Stepanavan (Armenia), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Pristina (Kosovo), Pljevlja (Montenegro) and Skopje (North Macedonia) have plenty of lessons learned and progress to share about not only catalyzing urban transformation but changing the way local governments work. Hear about CEF methods that change the role of municipal bodies and the fascinating reflections of their ongoing learning journeys from local municipal actors involved.
