Jan Kattein, DipArch, MArch, PhD, FIPM is an author, lecturer and practitioner who lives in London. After completing a degree, postgraduate diploma and a Masters in architecture at the Bartlett, he worked in social housing before pursuing a brief career in theatre design. In 2004 he finally established his own studio, Jan Kattein Architects.
He is lecturer in Architecture and Engagement at UCL, a fellow of the Institute of Place Management at the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School and a registered architect in the UK and the Netherlands. His contribution transcends disciplinary boundaries and includes writing, speaking, architecture, design and urbanism.
Jan’s PhD thesis ‘The Architecture Chronicle: Diary of an Architectural Practice’ was published by Ashgate in ‘14. In ‘24 Lund Humphries published his second book, ‘Londoners making London’. Jan’s writing critically reflects on the role of the architect and their responsibility to society. His research has established the methodology that characterises his studio's work.
Today, Jan Kattein Architects is recognized internationally as one of the leading placemaking and participatory design practices with projects that are celebrated for their spatial- and civic accomplishments. Important awards include a MacEwen commendation for a lifetime of architecture for the common good, a Social Value Architect of the year award, a TET Best Built Environment Practice and several Civic Trust Awards.
