Forum Cities: Prototyping Democracy: Exploring Human Sovereignty in the Age of Advancing Technology
This workshop will explore the technological infrastructures that underpin our cities and how to make them more human-centered and equitable. Most of the things that make cities work are unseen – technology, security, sensors, grids, sewage systems, waste disposal. Advancing technology, especially AI and sensorized systems, are often seen as a threat to democracy and our human agency. Do we control the systems, or do they control us? At the same time, new technology has vast potential. Is it possible to deploy collective surveillance using AI for better public wellbeing outcomes, and to advance, rather than limit, human rights?
After a powerful experience to kick things off, we’ll identify some real-life challenges and co-create positive solutions through the legislative theatre methodology – a participatory democracy process that offers a joyful, creative, and accessible way to co-create laws and policies.
This session is organised in collaboration with BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt RISE Cities.
More speakers to be announced soon.
