Opening Talk (EN)
The Opening Talk in our international programme half (English language) focuses on one of the most important cracks in our bureaucratic system: statelessness.
There are more than 15 million stateless people across the world. They don’t belong to any country and are not recognised as a citizen by any state. And without a recognised nationality, they are left isolated and denied basic human rights in a vicious cycle that’s difficult to break.
How does the notion of citizenship need to change in the world we’re moving into?
What would it take to stop citizenship being used and abused as a political weapon?
Dreaming of a brighter future, what do bureaucratic structures that support and protect everyone look like?
Hear from the brilliant social change maker Christiana Bukalo who founded and leads Statefree (https://statefree.world), the first global community for stateless people and their allies. In 2024 Christiana also became an Ashoka Fellow, and will be interviewed here by Ashoka (https://www.ashoka.org/en-us) senior leader Sascha Haselmayer.
