AI Policy Brief- From Policy to AI Practice
Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming public administration—from automated decision-making processes to new forms of citizen engagement. However, these opportunities raise key questions:
How can trust in AI systems be established in a government context? What regulatory frameworks are necessary? And how can transparency and traceability be ensured?
A leading panel of international experts will discuss these questions at the side event “AI Policy Brief – From Policy to AI Practice,” based on the newly published international AI Policy Brief on the use of AI in public administration. Prof. Peter Parycek (Director of the Competence Center for Public IT) will provide a brief introduction to the report and, together with his co-authors, discuss international perspectives as well as concrete recommendations for action in the public sector.
The panel offers insights into current international developments, places them within the national and European context, and invites discussion on how trustworthy AI can be concretely designed in public administration. The discussion will focus on four key areas:
- the redesign of public services to address real-world social problems before AI is deployed,
- the targeted development of institutional capabilities through continuing education and interdisciplinary collaboration,
- strengthening the public sector’s position vis-à-vis technology providers through collective procurement and cooperation,
- and embedding AI within a “trust stack” based on transparency, accountability, effective oversight, and resilience.
The AI Policy Brief was developed in collaboration with international experts, including Prof. Catherine Régis (Montréal) and Prof. Florian Martin-Bariteau (University of Ottawa), and provides a solid foundation for the discussion on the responsible and trustworthy use of AI in government.
