Lessons from the South: How NGOs Are Sparking Innovation within Government in Brazil
According to a 2017 research, Brazilians are the 2nd population least satisfied with the quality of public service in the world.
Even since before the coronavirus pandemic, governments were under severe fiscal crisis in Brazil, notably due to salary rises and plummeting commodity prices. In such a scenario, innovating is key for survival; nonetheless, the Brazilian public sector has seen little innovation in the past decade. This was the truth until a recent wave of innovation started reaching the Government in Brazil, primarily coming from the outside; from NGOs.
How are these foundations leading public sector innovation in Brazil? The following piece will show some of the latest and most innovative examples. Starting with Awards created by the civil society to recognize the best public servants in the country; professional selection process for key Government Positions sponsored by third parties; and others.
Eloy is a civic entrepreneur, currently a Board-member at República.org (which he directed from 2016 to 2021), a foundation focused on improving Brazil’s public sector workforce by awarding high performers, encouraging skilled professionals to enter public service and providing resources to encourage best practices.
